For as long as I can remember I’ve loved interior design. Growing up I was always rearranging my furniture, DIYing new decorations for my room, and of course, I have always loved browsing the home decor aisles at every store! Slowly but surly over the last few months I have been working on re-decorating my childhood bedroom. I still live at home with my parents and little brother, but I have been wanting my space to feel “more adult.” I’ve almost completely gotten rid of all the old zebra print and lime green decor (who else had this as their color palette growing up!?) and I finally feel like my room is starting to reflect who I am today, as opposed to who I was when I was 11!!
Re-decorating my space has been kind of an emotional roller-coaster for me for a few reasons. My major motivation for redecorating and getting rid of my childhood decor is so that I can take everything with me when I move out in the next couple years. This is so bittersweet. I’m excited for a new chapter to begin soon, but it’s also hard knowing I will be leaving this place I have called home, the place I grew up and made so many memories, very soon.
Beyond this, redecorating my room also marks another milestone in my journey. Something I have struggled with my whole life is being very very messy. I know, most kids have a messy room, but my friends and family will tell you that I am on another level of messy. Seeing even a small spot on my floor, not covered in piles of clothes, shocks my loved ones. My messy habit is honestly one of my biggest insecurities and something that has been the root of much of my anxiety throughout my life. I know it may sound silly to some, but the idea of going through my stuff and cleaning my room is so overwhelming to me and it always have been.
As I’ve been going through this process I have been growing so much as a person. My room has become a place of peace and relaxation, whereas even a few months ago, walking in my messy room, stepping over the piles of clothes and who knows what else, gave me so much anxiety. I’m finding that there really is something to be said about having a clean and peaceful space, and I’m so excited to continue to throw away the old and begin again.
Like I’ve mentioned, this process is slow and I’m no where near “the end.” Things are definitely not where I want them to be yet and I still have SO much stuff to get rid of, and so many new aspects I want to add. But I thought it would be fun today to share a few of my favorite home decor pieces I’ve added so far!
So I like to refer to my style as “comfy + chic.” Like I mentioned above, I want my space to be somewhere I can let my stress go and feel at peace. I want to feel motivated but relaxed. I know just last week I talked about the power of being uncomfortable, but this is my room, SO I want this to be my comfy, cozy, safe-haven! Therefore I’ve gone for soft tones in my decor, mostly greys, whites, and pops of light pinks here and there.
My bed was my starting point in this process, I went with a basic down white comforter and just a couple cozy accent pillows. I also chose patterned sheets and a couple textured throw blankets to liven up the otherwise basic bedding. A tip if you’re on-the-go and typically messy like me, don’t go crazy with the bedding! If you have a hundred accent pillows and throws you will NEVER make your bed! Just go with one or two cute pillows so it’s quick and easy to make your bed everyday (or let’s be real, once a month when company comes over!).
For accent pieces around my bed I wanted to keep it simple once again, no crazy colors, nothing too fancy. One of my favorite finds yet is this gorgeous gold and white distressed wood sign from Hobby Lobby, it simply says “Blessed” in beautiful cursive font and I love how it pulls the room together! It’s currently on sale from under $15! Most of the other accent pieces around my bed are from stores like Homegoods and TJ Maxx, so it’s tricky to find the EXACT pieces to share with you, but I will be linking similar items below if you want to get the look!
One other quick tip I want to share before I ramble on for too long, again if you are like me and eat/drink in your room, get coasters! These gorgeous marble ones are perfect for anywhere in the house, but I love keeping one on my bedside and desk for my coffee and water glasses.
Alrighty, I hope you guys love this new series! I have so many ideas I can’t wait to get started on. Let me know if there’s anything specific you would like to see in the comments!
